Italian players end strike

Italy's soccer strike, which has delayed the start of the new season, effectively ended on Monday when Serie A and the Italian Players' Union (AIC) buried their differences and signed a collective contract.


"A new collective contract, valid until the end of June 2012, has been signed today," the Italian soccer federation (FIGC) said in a statement.

The FIGC said the contract was signed in the presence of its president Giancarlo Abete, Serie A president Maurizio Beretta and AIC president Damiano Tommasi.

"The signing followed a meeting in which the legal representatives of the two parties ironed out the final details," added the statement.

The announcement means that Serie A can start on Friday with the meeting of defending champions AC Milan and Lazio, the first round of matches on August 27 and 28 having been called off.

The agreement had been widely expected after the League said last Thursday it was prepared to renegotiate several terms of the contract.

The previous agreement expired at the end of the 2009-10 season and negotiations for its renewal dragged on for the whole of last season.

The AIC said it believed an agreement had been reached in December, when a strike was called off at the last moment, but the Serie A did not sign. The AIC ran out of patience last month, saying the season could not start until the signing took place.

"It's the agreement we reached in December and it's disappointing that the signature has arrived so late, but it was important to have the agreement signed before we played," said AIC president, former Italy international Damiano Tommasi.

"We will play from Friday and I think the players will be given credit for their good sense in this negotiation. It (the agreement) is a starting point and I hope it will be a good sign for the next one."

Serie A president Maurizio Beretta said: "It's a profoundly innovative agreement and it was worth our hardline stance because the clubs have achieved much of what they wanted."

The sticking point had been article seven, which concerns players who are no longer wanted by their clubs.

The AIC had demanded that the players be allowed to train with the first team until their contracts expired, while the clubs wanted the coaching staff to have the power to decide.

Strike Ends, A Series Begins This Week

After being delayed due to strikes, 2011/2012 Serie A season will finally begin this weekend. The parties to the dispute have signed the agreement while.

A series that was supposed to start at the end of last month was postponed because of conflicts and problems concerning future taxes that players have to practice alone as a result excluded from the team.

"Like the Beretta said, if the club received a lot, then we do not need much discussion when the new agreement is required when a tentative agreement is no longer valid," Tommasi said.

Series A will be opened this week with a match AC Milan vs. Lazio on Saturday (09/10/2011) pm dawn. On Sunday (09/11/2011) pm dawn, Cesena will meet Napoli.

Sunday (11/09/2011) night, will host Parma Juventus, while Roma visited Cagliari. Palermo vs. Inter Milan match will be held on Monday, 9/12/2011 will be the ultimate game on the opening weekend.

       The threat of strike players in the inaugural match Serie A this season could potentially happen if the League Serie A is still broken a promise. This is confirmed by an open letter signed by 20 participants captain Serie-A. They called for the Lega Serie-A quickly ratify collective agreement on player contracts.

      Bleak note, the players want to be protected so that the club did not act arbitrarily. They therefore proposed a plan of collective contracts on FIGC whose contents may be filed for each player in the sale and the club must not give doubt. AIC felt it necessary contract after emerging cases of Goran Pandev and Cristian Ledesma some time ago. Status of both players had a chance in the freeze by Lazio because they asked for in the sale.

     In the meeting on 30 May, FIGC previously approved the draft contract was hoped a deal could happen. However, AIC is only willing to sign, while the Lega Serie A is not.
